Our Women’s Football Journey

Women’s football has a proud history at Apollo FC and in the Limestone Coast region:

  • 2003: Women’s football in the region was established through the South East Women’s Football Association (SEWFA), which was initially founded by members of the Apollo community — Stuart and Nicky Birch, Nigel and Althea Inglis — along with Wendy Ielasi from International and Julie Andrews from Centrals. Their aim was to create opportunities and provide support for females of all ages to get involved in football. The league began with four teams: City, Palace, United, and Villa. SEWFA matches were hosted at Apollo FC’s Webb Street grounds for the first three years before relocating to Blue Lake Sports Park as the competition outgrew its original venue, with the majority of early matches officiated by Bill Stephenson. Each year, the league continued to grow, developing teams and players across the region and strengthening participation in the sport. SEWFA operated as a separate league from the men’s competition during this period, fostering an independent and dedicated pathway for women’s football. SEWFA Facebook Group.

  • 2017: City Football Club, a SEWFA club, Senior Women's team amalgamated with Apollo FC, sharing facilities while continuing to compete in the women’s competition as City FC.

  • 2018: Junior Girls grades from Wanders FC also joined forces with Apollo. This unified approach created the first Apollo women’s teams in club history, competing as Apollo City in the SEWFA league. The inaugural matches were played at Webb Street on March 23rd, 2018.

  • 2021: Apollo City FC completed its full amalgamation, with all teams proudly competing under the unified Apollo Football Club name. In the same year, the SEWFA League also completed its amalgamation with the Limestone Coast Football Association (LCFA), with all female teams now competing together in the LCFA Premier League — strengthening pathways and opportunities for women and girls in our region.

Today, we’re committed to building on this legacy — encouraging more women and girls to get involved, have fun, and thrive through football.
